Peter A. Basso is a co-founder of Basso & Khare LLC.  He represents employees in employment negotiations, litigation, and alternative dispute resolution.  Mr. Basso’s cases include matters involving discrimination, harassment, and retaliation; breach of contract; executive compensation; non-compete and non-solicit clauses; unpaid wages and benefits; and whistleblowers.  Mr. Basso also counsels small businesses, entrepreneurs and start-ups as well as nonprofit organizations in complying with their employment obligations and instituting best practices for managing personnel.  Since founding Basso & Khare, Mr. Basso has cultivated a growing practice focused on helping nonprofit organizations and community groups in formation, seeking tax exemption under § 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, State and federal compliance issues, and Board governance.

Previously, Mr. Basso worked as an associate at the New York City firm of Eisenberg & Schnell LLP, where he gained experience working on a broad range of employment cases in State and Federal court as well as arbitration before the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the American Arbitration Association (AAA).  In 2011, Mr. Basso assisted with drafting an amicus curiae brief to the New York Court of Appeals on a successful appeal that affirmed an expansive interpretation of the New York City Human Rights Law.  Following law school, Mr. Basso served as the Law Clerk to the Honorable Jonathan N. Harris of the New Jersey Superior Court, Bergen County Vicinage (now sitting in the Appellate Division).

Mr. Basso holds a J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law, where he served as co-chair of the Queer Caucus, an LGBT student advocacy organization.  He also served as teaching facilitator for a pro bono legal project on behalf of Women Are Getting Even, Inc. (“WAGE”), a nonprofit organization that advocates closing the gender wage gap (an average of 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man).  Prior to law school, Mr. Basso gained his first exposure to the legal profession working as a Legal Assistant for Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) in Boston, Massachusetts, which at the time was in the midst of challenging the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for its denial of the right to marry to same-sex couples.

Mr. Basso is active in the Jersey City community and has volunteered as a Board member of several local organizations, which have advocated for renewed interest in preserving and revitalizing Jersey City’s urban parks.  In 2011-12, he served as President of the Washington Park Association of Hudson County, Inc. (WPA) and Vice President of the Jersey City Parks Coalition (JCPC) from 2012 to 2014.  Mr. Basso has devoted time to positive programming for urban youth, serving as a writing instructor for NJ LEEP (New Jersey Legal Education and Empowerment Program) in Newark, New Jersey and as a volunteer for Go Get My Kids, Inc., an organization in Jersey City, New Jersey engages urban youth through athletics.
